United Kingdom. Distinguished Service Medal (DSM)
British decoration established by George V in 1914. A medal awarded to Royal Navy personnel for gallantry or distinguished conduct during active service at sea. During the First World War only 4,100 medals were issued.
The inscription on the rim of the medal reads «172758 G. BOON. LG. SEAN H.M.S. COLUMBELLA» in reference to Leading seaman George Boon and his meritorious service aboard HMS Columbella in 1916.
