Spain. Machete Bayonet Model 1913
Royal Order of March 11, 1913
Marked «PV», corresponding to bayonets manufactured by the Valencia Arsenal (Parque de Valencia) during the Spanish Civil War by the People’s Army of the Republic. Serial number: 2374.
Hilt: The weapon features a crossguard with a muzzle ring and two checkered wooden grips, securely fastened to the tang with two cross bolts. It includes a longitudinal groove, a latch with release button, and an internal spring, allowing it to firmly attach to the rifle. All metal parts, including the guard, are made of blued steel, offering durability and a consistent finish.
Blade: Straight-profile blade with a muzzle ring base (bigotera), sharpened edge on the outer side, and flat square spine on the inner side. A longitudinal fuller runs nearly to the tip, reducing weight without compromising strength.
Scabbard: Made of black leather, the scabbard features a blued steel throat and chape. A metal hook is provided for attaching the bayonet to the uniform’s frog, ensuring ease of transport and quick access.
This model replaced the standard knife-bayonet used with the Spanish Mauser Model 1893 rifle, marking a transition toward a more robust and functional design in the soldier’s auxiliary armament. Adopted in 1913 as the Machete Bayonet Model 1913, it was originally designed for a proposed bayonet-equipped version of the M1895 carbine. However, with the adoption of the short rifle Model 1916, the M1913 bayonet was designated for its use. It was later also assigned to the short rifle Model 1943.
